The Islamic State in Sub-Sahara Africa (EIGS) has claimed responsibility for a deadly ambush that killed 17 soldiers and six civilian drivers in the Sahel region of northern Burkina Faso.
The attack, which occurred on Sunday near Katchirga village between Dori and Seytenga towns, targeted a convoy transporting goods to Niger.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, EIGS described the ambush as “precise” and claimed responsibility for inflicting heavy casualties.
According to reports, the ambush resulted in the destruction of five military vehicles, with three additional vehicles incapacitated. Four soldiers are reported missing.
A secure source confirmed the casualties, adding that the convoy was being escorted by both Nigerien and Burkinabe military personnel. Casualties were also recorded on the Burkinabe side, although details remain unclear.
