A customary court sitting in Kafanchan, Kaduna State, has sentenced an 18-year-old boy, Gado Adamu, to five months’ imprisonment for stealing a pregnant goat.
Adamu was charged with theft and unlawful possession of a weapon, offences contrary to Sections 345 and 270 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law.
The defendant pleaded guilty when the charges were read to him and appealed to the court for leniency.
Delivering judgment on March 18, presiding judge Patience Baryat sentenced him to three months’ imprisonment for unlawful possession of a weapon, with an option of a N20,000 fine. He was also handed a two-month jail term or a N10,000 fine for th+ft.
Earlier, prosecution counsel Favour Solomon told the court that the case was reported at the Kafanchan Divisional Police Station on February 2.
According to the prosecution, Adamu was apprehended by residents of Zankan village while in possession of a pregnant she-goat valued at N160,000. He was also found carrying an unlicensed dane gun.
