Nigeria’s First Lady Oluremi Tinubu says when safe, clean and accessible water is guaranteed, the society does more than quench thirst, but also open doors for girls to stay in school, women to pursue livelihoods, and for families to enjoy healthier lives.
In her message marking this year’s World Water Day celebration with the theme, “Water and Gender”, the First Lady notes that the special campaign slogan “Where Water Flows, Equality Grows,” captures the unique connection between access to water, sanitation, and gender equity.
While pointing out that across many communities, women and girls still bear the primary responsibility for getting water, often walking long distances to streams at the expense of their education, health, and economic opportunities, she called on Nigerians to work together towards ensuring that where water flows in the country, equity truly grows.
