2027: NNPP Letter to Governor Yusuf of Kano

It seems from all the actions of the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP) in Kano state and the inactions of the governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and his political godfather, Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, on the ongoing multiple conflicts that keep surging and spiraling in the party, may lead the party to fail woefully and be defeated in the 2027 elections.

Since Governor Yusuf assumed office as governor of Kano state, one and half year after, the party began to witness and keep experiencing deep internal crises.Surprisingly, among the counted crises, none was handled and managed properly and effectively.

Maybe their godfather, who is the leader of Kwankwasiyya Movement Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is seeing that having his good reputation and being the Aminu Kano of today’s Kano they would catch up in 2027. This is making them forget that Kano is a melting pot and the voters in the state are notoriously unpredictable. People within and outside Kano state can testify to this assertion.

Even Kwankwaso himself experienced the kind of above-board tactics that people of Kano state often play and showcase in politics.

Some may ask why I refer to them as notoriously unpredictable followers. In 2003, after Kwankwaso finished his first term, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau defeated him and took over from Kwankwaso, despite being the chief executive in the state and sharing the same party with President Olusegun Obasanjo. But the people of Kano flushed him out of office and installed Shekarau as the governor of Kano state.

It’s the same people, who, after Shekarau spent eight years as governor of Kano state, he chose Salihu Sagiru Takai as his successor, but they demonstrated and showed their distinctive attitude of being a melting pot (Kano).

They came out en masse and massively stood against the candidate of Shekarau and brought back Kwankwaso with a slogan”Kwankwaso Dawo Dawo,” meaning “Kwankwaso should return to finish his remaining one term.” Luckily, as he answered their call and contested the election in 2011, he won the election and became the governor of Kano state for his second term. This also happened to Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje in 2023. Perhaps history would still repeat itself.

According to hearsays and actions seen from Deputy Senate President Barau I Jibrin of the APC in Kano, the party may use Barau as their governorship candidate in the 2027 elections. Though there’s no clear and evident fact about what people are speculating, if APC chooses Barau Jibrin as their candidate, there’s a very strong-tendency that Abba Yusuf will also be voted out. As for now, Barau has already colonised Kano North because even if Kwankwaso were to contest the election with Barau, he would be defeated in Kano North. Barau Jibrin has colonised his constituents with human capital development.

Barau Jibrin’s colonisation has now reached the two remaining Kano senatorial zones, which are Kano South and Kano Central, despite only representing the people of Kano North. But he extended his kind gesture and initiatives to the other zones.

Why did Barau choose to extend his initiatives and empowerments to Kano South and Central? He has established university centers in Kano Central and South, giving all Kano citizens the opportunity to participate in his empowerment programmes.

In these critical conditions, when the NNPP is facing serious competition from the major opposition party, APC, in Kano, they have chosen to suspend their founders and important political figures and titans within their party. The chairman of NNPP in Kano is either civically and politically ignorant or lacking in party leadership strategy.

How can NNPP expect better outcomes when they are having problems with influential figures like Kawa Sumaila, Baffa Bichi, and Ali Sani Madaki, among other prominent Kwankwsaiyya leaders?

Not only at state level NNPP is facing troubles and challenges but they are also experiencing issues at the local government level. Yet, they seem to be downplaying these internal crises.

For instance, a strong youth group led by Malam Abubakar Mai Kanzu in Getso and a former vice chairman Gwarzo local government area Alhaji Abdullahi Sani Kwami of NNPP Gwarzo, where the deputy governor Comrade Aminu Abdussalamu Gwarzo hails from, have defected from NNPP to APC. Senator Barau even welcomed them with a handshake.

Now, they suspended the leader and most respected political figure in Kano South, Senator Kawu Sumaila, who people think may also decamp to another party. If he chooses to leave the party for APC, it’s going to favour APC and give them a great chance to return to power in 2027 elections, but let’s see what the NNPP’s reaction will be on the issue of decamping from their umbrella to another umbrella.

Remember that when you “do nothing, expect that nothing will surely happen”.
