26-year-old Man Arrested Over  Assaults

A 26-year-old man has been arrested and another suspect is being hunt following allegations that the two men sodomised multiple minors in the Kapata Township in Chipata City.

Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba has confirmed to Diamond News that the case was opened at the Chipata Central Police Station on Monday, September, 29, 2025 after the mother of a seven-year-old boy reported.

Mr. Mweemba has identified the arrested individual as Michael Phiri and his accomplice as a man known only as Acheba, both residents of the Kapata Township.

It is alleged that the assaults occurred at an unspecified time in September behind commercial booths in Kapata were the two men are accused of intercepting the seven-year-old boy, along with two nine-year-old boys and taking them behind a red booth.

The children were reportedly given beer and forced to smoke cigarettes.

Mr. Phiri and Acheba then took two of the boys inside a red booth and sexually assaulted them and threatened with death if they disclosed the events to anyone.

The matter was reported to the parents by the minor after the two accused men allegedly approached the seven-year-old’s home the following day, prompting the child to inform his mother.

The victims were referred to Chipata Central Hospital for medical examination.
Michael Phiri remains detained as the investigation continues.
