50% Telecom Increase: MTN, Airtel, Glo, 9mobile Release New Prices For Data, Voice Calls, SMS

MTN Face Severe Disruption Amid #EndBadGovernance: Report

Barely few days after the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) approved a 50 per cent tariff increase for telecom services in the country, leading telecom operators, including MTN, Glo, Airtel and 9mobile have revised their prices for data, SMS and voice calls upward.

For MTN, the price for 25GB now stands at N9,750 (previously N6,500), while 10GB, 5GB, and 1GB now cost N5,250, N2,250, and N525, respectively.

These represent significant increases from their earlier rates of N3,500, N1,500, and N350.

Airtel’s 23GB data plan has risen to N9,000 from N6,000, while 10GB is now N4,500, up from N3,000.

Adjustments in 9mobile data price include a rise in the 22GB data plan to N7,500 (previously N5,000), with 9.5GB now costing N3,750, up from N1,500.

For Glo users, 24GB is now priced at N7,500 (up from N5,000), while 10.8GB costs N 3,000, an increase from N2,500.

Telecom operators have cited several factors driving the hike, including inflation, escalating fuel prices, foreign exchange volatility, and rising infrastructure maintenance costs.

The NCC, in its statement, emphasized that the adjustment was necessary to ensure the sector’s sustainability amidst Nigeria’s challenging economic environment.

The price hikes have sparked widespread dissatisfaction among consumers, many of whom are already burdened by a high cost of living.

Social media platforms have been awash with complaints, with users lamenting the increased financial strain on households and businesses reliant on internet access.Tap Here To Read Full Details
