Eye witnesses said the accident occurred along the Gombe-Kumo Road at Mile Uku Sabuwa, near Biu Roundabout.
The truck loaden with assorted foodstuffs lost control.
According to some accounts, the driver of a truck was attempting a U-turn when the brakes reportedly failed, veered off the road, ploughing into roadside shops and pedestrians.
Among those killed was a woman inside her shop, several others were injured.
