A government-chartered evacuation flight arranged by Ghana to repatriate up to 300 of its citizens from South Africa amid heightened anti immigration protests took off from OR Tambo International Airport today, Thursday with only a single passenger on board.

The early-morning departure, scheduled for around 5 a.m. on May 21, 2026, was part of an emergency operation announced by Ghana’s Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa earlier in the week.

Following reports of anti-immigrant protests and alleged harassment targeting foreign nationals, particularly from other African countries, Ghana’s government had registered distressed citizens at its embassy in Pretoria and pledged a fully funded flight, along with reintegration support including financial aid, transport, counseling, and job opportunities upon return.Tap To Read Complete.Details. .
