The Kano State Hisbah Board has announced the commencement of medical screening for 3,000 prospective couples registered for the state’s upcoming mass wedding programme.

Speaking in a telephone interview on Sunday, the board’s Deputy Commander General, Sheikh Mujahedeen Aminudeen, said the exercise is scheduled to begin on Monday across 24 local government areas of the state.

According to him, the screening will involve 1,500 male and 1,500 female participants and is aimed at determining their health status before they are cleared for the programme.

Aminudeen explained that the board, in collaboration with the Kano State Ministry of Health and the State Agency for the Control of AIDS, has finalized plans to conduct tests for HIV/AIDS, genotype compatibility, hepatitis B, drug use, gonorrhoea, and other sexually transmitted infections.

He urged all registered participants to report to Hisbah offices in their respective local government areas for the exercise, warning that anyone who fails to participate will be removed from the programme.

He added that only those who successfully pass the mandatory medical screening will be eligible to take part in the mass wedding.

The mass wedding initiative was reintroduced by the Kano State Government under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf as part of efforts to address social challenges, including prostitution, while providing marriage support for individuals whose families may not have the financial means to fund wedding expenses.
