Former Nigerian Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke has spoken out about the challenges she faced during her tenure, revealing that her fight against cabals in the oil sector made her a target.
“It’s been very painful. My fight against the cabals in the Nigerian oil sector put a target on my back, which is why they came after me,” she said in a new interview.
She also reflected on the additional burden of being a woman in a male-dominated space. “I was the first female to hold the position of petroleum minister in a very misogynistic society. Patriarchal, if you want to call it that.”
Her comments come after a UK court acquitted her of all bribery charges, ending an 11-year legal ordeal. The former minister has consistently maintained her innocence, describing the trial as traumatic for her and her family.
