Former Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has paid a heartfelt tribute to former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, following news of the football icon’s death.
In a post shared via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Sani described Rufai as “a goalkeeper like no other,” stating that the late footballer “charged a generation of Nigerian fans with his unique style and talent at the post.”
Sani recalled their last meeting at the Sheraton Hotel in Abuja, describing Rufai as “a part of Nigerian football history.”
“A part of Nigerian football history has died today. Rest well, great soul,” he wrote, while extending condolences to the family of the deceased, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), and the Super Eagles.
Rufai, affectionately known as “Dodo Mayana,” was one of Nigeria’s most iconic goalkeepers, famously part of the golden squad that lifted the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and qualified Nigeria for its first-ever FIFA World Cup in the same year.
