Activist Sowore Alleges Police Harassment Over Use of AI Glasses to Expose Extortion

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has accused the Nigeria Police Force of harassment and impunity following his deployment of Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses to expose alleged extortion by police officers in Lagos.

LeadNaija Learnt In a statement on his verified X handle, Sowore said he used the device in January 2025 to document a notorious extortion team along the Murtala Mohammed International Airport road. According to him, he was subsequently arraigned before the Federal High Court in Abuja, where the police alleged that recording corrupt officers amounted to cybercrime. Presiding judge, Justice M.S. Liman, granted him bail but ordered the seizure of his international passport.

Sowore also recounted how during the #PoliceProtest at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, the Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, allegedly ordered a cameraman, Victor Chiemerie Aku, to seize his AI glasses. He said the device was only later returned to him by DCP Akin Fakorede of the IGP Monitoring Unit after police failed to access its stored content.

He questioned the credibility of police “official statements” condemning extortion, alleging that such practices are sanctioned by senior commanders.

Sowore further described technology as a critical weapon against corruption, insisting that Nigerian leaders fear digital accountability. He cited Senate Chief Whip, Opeyemi Bamidele, who recently described social media as a “national threat,” as proof of government discomfort with digital resistance.

Saluting a Lagos youth who resisted extortion in the viral video, Sowore urged Nigerians to embrace body cameras, AI glasses, and dashboard cameras as protective tools against police brutality and cover-ups.
