Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has received a report recommending the upgrade of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic into a full-fledged university to be known as the University of Agriculture, Science and Technology (UNASTO).
The governor described the proposal as a strategic move to advance development in agriculture, science, and technology within the state, noting that it aligns with broader efforts to strengthen education and innovation.

Aiyedatiwa said the proposed institution has a well-structured academic, financial, and infrastructural framework, adding that innovation—particularly in artificial intelligence—will play a key role in driving productivity.
He also stressed the need for a seamless transition process to safeguard the interests of current students of the polytechnic.
The committee behind the proposal, chaired by Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun, said the upgrade is aimed at addressing the growing demand for university education while enhancing the institution’s global competitiveness.
According to the committee, the plan includes the establishment of multiple faculties, a five-year sustainability roadmap, and a draft bill to be submitted to the National Universities Commission for approval.
If approved, the transformation is expected to reposition the institution as a hub for research, innovation, and specialized training in key sectors of the economy.
