President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has attributed the recent surge in insecurity across the country to remarks made by the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, suggesting the comments may have emboldened insurgents and armed groups to intensify their attacks.
Akpabio made the assertion on Wednesday during a heated Senate debate on Nigeria’s worsening security situation. He warned that the pattern of coordinated attacks shows that “Nigeria is under attack”, stressing the need for urgent action from security agencies.
The Senate President said intelligence reports indicate that certain militant groups interpreted President Donald Trump’s comments as a green light to step up violence, adding that the country must not “ignore the external influences fueling domestic insecurity.”
He called on the Federal Government, military chiefs, and national security stakeholders to adopt a more aggressive, technology-driven strategy to confront banditry, terrorism, and organized crime.
Akpabio also urged lawmakers to set aside political sentiments and unite behind policies that can restore public safety, warning that continued escalation could threaten the nation’s stability.
