Mojtaba Khamenei, the second son of the late Ali Khamenei, has been named Iran’s new Supreme Leader, according to Iranian state media.

The 56-year-old cleric was announced as his father’s successor on Sunday following a vote by the powerful Assembly of Experts, the body responsible for selecting Iran’s highest authority.

His father, who had ruled Iran for decades, was reportedly k+lled last Saturday during strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran. In recent years, Mojtaba Khamenei had increasingly been mentioned as a potential successor due to his close relationship with his father, though he had never publicly addressed the possibility.

Ahead of the official announcement, cleric Hosseinali Eshkevari revealed that the Assembly had already voted. “The name of Khamenei will continue,” he said in a video shared by Iranian media. “The vote has been cast and will be announced soon.”

Iran’s Supreme Leader holds the highest authority in the Islamic Republic, with final say on major state matters, including the military and government policies.

Mojtaba’s rise could mark the emergence of a political dynasty reminiscent of the rule of the Pahlavi dynasty that governed Iran before the 1979 Iranian Revolution.

Meanwhile, exiled crown prince Reza Pahlavi,  son of the last Shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi,  recently said he had accepted a “call” to lead Iran, positioning himself as a key opposition figure. The White House has yet to react publicly to Mojtaba Khamenei’s appointment.

However, U.S. President Donald Trump earlier warned that any new Iranian leader “is not going to last long” without American approval, a demand Tehran has rejected.

In its statement, the Assembly of Experts said Khamenei was chosen through a “decisive vote” and urged Iranians, particularly intellectuals and religious scholars, to remain united and support the new leader.Get The Full, Details. .
