Amnesty International Nigeria and its volunteers on Wednesday stormed the Federal High Court, Abuja, in solidarity with human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, who is facing fresh charges before the court.
The rights group said rather than “attempting to silence dissenting voices,” Nigerian authorities should engage more with citizens and respect their right to peaceful expression.
“People have the right to peacefully agree or disagree with those in power,” Amnesty International stated.
Sowore, a human rights defender and former presidential candidate, was declared a Prisoner of Conscience by Amnesty International in November 2019.
Since then, he has faced repeated arrests, prolonged detentions, and alleged violations of his rights, all linked to his activism for human rights, social justice, and the rule of law.
Observers say the trial has once again drawn attention to concerns about civic space and the treatment of activists in Nigeria.
