An elderly man drowned at a beach in Hong Kong’s New Territories on Sunday.

The 70-year-old, surnamed Lok, had been swimming at Butterfly Beach in Tuen Mun.

A postmortem examination would be carried out to ascertain the cause of death.

A number of drownings have been reported in recent months.
In early August, a 42-year-old man drowned at Ung Kong Wan on Bluff Island. He was on a boat trip and went swimming with two friends.

At least four drownings were reported in July, including a man, 30, who had been stand-up paddleboarding at Lamma Island, a 54-year-old who had been snorkelling in Sai Kung and a 55-year-old who had been scuba diving in Tai Po.

According to the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, five drownings occurred in public swimming pools or at beaches last year.
