Heartburn is a common digestive issue that causes a burning sensation in the chest, often after eating. It occurs when stomach acid flows back into the oesophagus, leading to discomfort and irritation.

While over-the-counter medications are available, many people prefer natural remedies to relieve symptoms. Here are some effective ways to manage heartburn naturally:

Ginger

Ginger has long been used to soothe digestive discomfort. It helps reduce acid production and inflammation in the stomach. Drinking ginger tea or chewing a small piece of fresh ginger can provide relief from heartburn.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Although it may seem counterintuitive, apple cider vinegar can help balance stomach acid levels. Mixing a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of warm water and drinking it before meals may aid digestion and prevent acid reflux.

Aloe Vera Juice

Aloe vera has soothing properties that can calm inflammation in the oesophagus. Drinking a small amount of aloe vera juice before meals may help reduce the frequency of heartburn episodes.

Baking soda

A natural antacid, baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) can neutralise stomach acid. Dissolve half a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water and drink it for quick relief. However, this should only be used occasionally, as excessive use may disrupt the body’s pH balance.

Bananas and Oatmeal

Foods like bananas and oatmeal are gentle on the stomach and help absorb excess acid. Bananas contain natural antacids, while oatmeal provides a soothing and filling meal option that reduces the likelihood of acid reflux.

Chewing Gum

Chewing sugar-free gum stimulates saliva production, which can help wash acid back down into the stomach. This can be particularly useful after meals to prevent heartburn symptoms.

Lifestyle Adjustments

Eat smaller meals: Large meals can put pressure on the stomach, increasing the risk of acid reflux.

Avoid trigger foods: Spicy, fatty, and acidic foods, as well as caffeine and alcohol, can worsen heartburn.

Stay upright after eating: Lying down immediately after a meal can allow acid to travel back up the oesophagus. Wait at least two to three hours before lying down.

Maintain a healthy weight: Excess weight can put pressure on the stomach, contributing to acid reflux.

While natural remedies can be effective, persistent or severe heartburn may indicate a more serious condition such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GORD). If symptoms persist despite lifestyle changes and home treatments, it is best to seek medical advice.
