At least 17 people have been confirmed d+ad after a brutal attack on Mbalom community in Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State during Easter celebrations.

Eyewitnesses said the sudden violence left many dead, several missing, and scores displaced. Residents reported that 17 bodies have so far been recovered, while search efforts continue in nearby bushes for others still unaccounted for.
The attacker also destroyed homes and properties, forcing survivors to flee for safety. A local resident, who spoke anonymously, described the chaos, “This is heartbreaking. People were caught unawares. Many are still missing.”
Witnesses said families ran into surrounding areas as gunshots echoed across the village. Reacting to the tragedy, Governor Hyacinth Alia, through his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, condemned the attack as “heinous” and unacceptable.
“The Governor strongly condemns the attack on the peace-loving people of Mbalom,” the statement read, adding that the act is a direct threat to the state’s peace and security.
He expressed sympathy to affected families and assured them of government support, while also noting a pattern of “calculated and selective attacks” in parts of the state.Continue, reading. .
