The African Union Commission (AUC) on Thursday issued a strong defence of Nigeria’s sovereignty, religious freedom and rule of law, while firmly rejecting recent United States claims that Abuja is complicit in the targeted killing of Christians and threats of military action.
In a detailed statement, the AUC underscored Nigeria’s status as a pivotal AU member state and stressed that any external intervention must fully respect the country’s territorial integrity and constitutional order.
“Nigeria is a longstanding and valued member state that plays a critical role in regional stability, counter-terrorism, peacekeeping and continental integration,” the Commission said.
The AU expressed concern over Washington’s allegations, warning that conflating complex security challenges with a single religious narrative risks undermining effective solutions and destabilising communities.
“Nigeria faces multifaceted threats—including violent extremism, banditry, communal clashes and resource-based conflicts—that affect citizens of all faiths,” the statement read.
It called for enhanced regional and international cooperation focused on intelligence-sharing, capacity-building and diplomatic engagement rather than unilateral military threats.
Reaffirming Nigeria’s constitutional guarantee of freedom of religion, the AUC rejected any form of religious persecution and pledged continued support through its peace and security architecture.
The Commission urged the United States and other external partners to pursue dialogue and partnership with Abuja, warning that threats of military intervention could violate AU principles of non-interference and jeopardise continental peace.
“The African Union remains committed to supporting all member states in promoting peace, security, human rights and development while upholding the sacred principles of sovereignty and non-interference,” the statement concluded.click on Read Original to read full article /news if you are reading from phoenix
