The Borno State government has officially inaugurated the Ngarannam Livestock Improvement and Ranch Settlement in Mafa Local Government Area.

The livestock ranch, launched on Saturday is designed to modernize the livestock sector, enhance productivity, and foster peaceful coexistence between herders and farmers.

Governor Babagana Zulum, speaking at the inauguration on Saturday, emphasized that the initiative goes beyond livestock production.

According to him, it also aimed to create jobs, empower youth and women, and reduce the farmer-herder clashes that have plagued the state for years.

“This initiative transcends mere livestock production; it is about creating jobs, empowering our youth and women, and alleviating the conflicts that have long plagued our communities,” Governor Zulum said.

“This project reflects our vision to rebuild and transform Borno. It aligns with the Borno state 25-year development plan and our 10-pact agenda.”

Idi Mukhtar Maiha, the Minister of Livestock Development, describing the project as a model for the entire country.

Alhaji Baba Usman Ngelzelma, the National President of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), commended the Borno State Government for its dedication to addressing the challenges faced by herders.

He highlighted the significance of the settlement, especially for those affected by insecurity.

“With this settlement, the Borno State Government has taken significant steps to address the challenges herders face, particularly the persistent farmer-herder conflicts in the state,” Ngelzelma said.

“The federal government is now paying the needed attention to herding activities, which were previously overshadowed by crop farming.”

Some of the key stakeholders at the inauguration ceremony include Attahiru Jega, co-chairman of the presidential livestock reforms implementation committee; Umar Kadafur, the deputy governor of Borno among others.

The Ngarannam settlement, span an area of 10 kilometers, includes critical infrastructure such as veterinary clinics, sustainable water supply systems, breeding centers, dairy and beef upgrading centers, and milk collection hubs.

The settlement also features housing estates, schools, health clinics, and pasture development centers.Tap Here for the Full Story
