In a dramatic turn in international diplomacy, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has declared that, should Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu enter Canadian territory, he would be arrested in compliance with an International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant.
Carney made the pronouncement during an interview with Bloomberg, where he affirmed that Canada would “act in accordance with international law” and enforce the ICC’s arrest orders.
The Prime Minister also reinforced Canada’s recognition of a Palestinian state, stating that Netanyahu’s government had “explicitly designed” policies to abort the possibility of statehood in violation of international norms and Canadian foreign policy dating back to 1947.
Israel, for its part, strongly rejects the ICC’s jurisdiction in the matter, noting that it is not a party to the Rome Statute under which the court operates.
The ICC had in November 2024 issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity during the Gaza conflict — including use of starvation as a method of warfare and targeting civilian populations.
Canada, as a State Party to the Rome Statute, is legally obliged to cooperate with ICC warrants — a position that Carney’s statement reaffirms. If You’re Reading From Phoenix Click On Read Original at the top To Read Full Article
Observers say Carney’s bold stance may further escalate tensions between Canada and Israel, especially over questions of butting sovereignty, diplomatic immunity, and the enforceability of international law in cases involving sitting heads of state.
