The Federal High Court in Abuja has convicted and sentenced former Acting Accountant-General of the Federation, Chukwunyere Nwabuoku, to a 72-year jail term without an option of fine for money laundering involving ₦868 million.

Justice James Omotosho, in his ruling on Monday, held that the EFCC had proven the nine-count charge beyond reasonable doubt. The judge sentenced Nwabuoku to eight years on each count, to run concurrently, meaning he will effectively serve eight years in prison.

The court described Nwabuoku’s act of diverting funds meant for security and defence while serving as Director of Finance and Account in the Ministry of Defence as “appalling.” The judge noted that the defendant had voluntarily refunded over ₦200 million during investigation.
