The Federal Government has approved an increase in the annual uniform allowance for nurses from ₦20,000 to ₦80,000, marking a significant improvement in welfare support for healthcare workers.
The approval was granted through the National Salaries, Wages, and Income Commission (NSWIC), following sustained advocacy by nursing bodies and stakeholders in the health sector.
In July 2025, the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) had strongly criticised the ₦20,000 yearly uniform allowance, describing it as grossly inadequate given prevailing economic realities and the professional demands placed on nurses.
The association had also called for broader systemic reforms, including the creation of a Directorate of Nursing Services at the Federal Ministry of Health, to be headed by a registered nurse, as part of efforts to strengthen nursing leadership and policy influence.
The newly approved allowance increase is being seen as a response to those concerns and a step toward improving motivation and retention within Nigeria’s nursing workforce.
Further details on the implementation timeline are expected to be announced by relevant government authorities.
