During his time at Liverpool, Yeats played an impressive 454 games before taking on the role of player-manager at Tranmere in 1971.

He served as the captain for over 400 of these appearances, a testament to his leadership and impact on the team, with only Steven Gerrard surpassing his captaincy record.

In January, it was revealed that Yeats had been battling Alzheimer’s disease, and the news of his passing has deeply saddened the football community. In response to the loss, Liverpool FC released a statement expressing their condolences and reflecting on Yeats’ monumental influence on the club.

Flags at Anfield and Liverpool’s training grounds will be flown at half-mast as a mark of respect for Yeats and his outstanding contributions to the sport. Throughout his career, he also earned two caps for Scotland in 1964 and 1965, further showcasing his talent and dedication on the international stage.

Yeats began his career at Dundee United before making his mark at Liverpool upon joining the club in 1961. His football journey also led him to play for Stalybridge Celtic and Barrow, along with a stint in the American Soccer League. Following his playing career, he made brief appearances at Formby and Rhyl before retiring in 1977.

Even in retirement, Yeats remained connected to the sport, rejoining Liverpool as chief scout in 1986, a position he held until his retirement in 2006. His enduring commitment to the game and his beloved club has left an indelible mark on the football world, and his legacy will be remembered for years to come.
