The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has called for the consideration of arming officers of the agency, stressing that it may be the only way to guarantee effective enforcement of traffic regulations across Nigeria’s highways. If You’re Reading From Phoenix Click On Read Original at the top To Read Full Article
Speaking on the challenges of enforcement, Mohammed questioned how unarmed patrol teams could stop heavy-duty vehicles without adequate protection.
“How do you stop a trailer or a tanker on the road? How do you just do that? It’s very, very difficult,” he said. “A truck, especially one carrying up to 100 passengers and animals, with only four officers on patrol, is almost impossible to control without force.”
The Corps Marshal noted that firearms would enhance the capacity of FRSC personnel to enforce compliance, arguing that the absence of such authority undermines the agency’s effectiveness.
“It (gun) will support. If you don’t have the power to enforce anything, there’s no way you can achieve that enforcement,” he added.
Mohammed also admitted that corruption remains a challenge within the corps, disclosing that a significant number of officers have been dismissed over bribery-related offences.
