The Giyani Municipality has called on the provincial government to expand the R81 road, a key route linking 91 villages and towns across Limpopo.+See more details
The road has become increasingly congested, prompting public outcry from motorists.
The plea appears to have reached Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba, whose office announced she will conduct festive traffic management at Kremart on Tuesday.
Motorists have reportedly been stuck for over three hours at Giyani’s main entrance, especially during the busy Christmas period.
Municipal spokesperson Steven Mabunda emphasized the importance of the R81, saying, “R81 is a key connector, leading north to Malamulele and the R524 towards Kruger National Park (Punda Maria gate), and south to Polokwane, where it links with the N1 to Gauteng Province.”
Mabunda noted that the municipality has been requesting an expansion for years. The road’s safety record adds urgency to the matter: in 2020, three vehicles collided and caught fire, resulting in 13 deaths.
As the R81 falls under provincial jurisdiction, the responsibility to address the congestion lies with the Limpopo government and the Roads Agency Limpopo (RAL).+See more details
