The Nigerian House of Representatives has announced it will reconvene for an emergency session on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, to address issues stemming from the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) recent release of the 2027 general election timetable.

In a press statement issued by House Spokesman, Rep. Akin Rotimi, the lower chamber highlighted the “constitutional and national significance” of INEC’s announcement, which includes setting February 20, 2027, as the date for presidential and National Assembly elections.

The emergency sitting was communicated to members via an internal memorandum from the Speaker’s office.

Deliberations will focus on legislative matters related to the timetable, underscoring the House’s commitment to swift action on issues impacting Nigeria’s democratic process.

Rep. Rotimi emphasized that all related business will be handled expeditiously, and members have been urged to prioritize attendance due to the importance of the discussions.

The move comes a day after INEC formally unveiled the full 2027 election schedule, including timelines for party primaries (July–September 2026) and continuous voter registration starting in April 2026.

This development follows ongoing discussions around potential amendments to the Electoral Act ahead of the 2027 polls.
