The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that 1,379,342 Nigerians successfully completed their online pre-registration for voter cards within just one week of commencement.
The exercise, which began on Monday, August 18, 2025, recorded a strong turnout, particularly among young Nigerians. A breakdown released by INEC shows that 661,846 (47.96%) are male, while 717,856 (52.04%) are female. Youths aged 18 to 34 accounted for the largest share with 860,286 (62.37%) registrants.
Students made up 374,534 (27.15%) of the new registrants, while 27,089 persons with disabilities (1.96%) also completed their online pre-registration.
INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of Information & Voter Education, Sam Olumekun (mni), who signed the statement, confirmed that physical voter registration commenced today (August 25) across the Commission’s 811 State and Local Government Area offices nationwide.
“This affords those who prefer the in-person option to register at designated centres and those who pre-registered online to complete their biometrics,” he said.
Olumekun cautioned that the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise is only open to Nigerian citizens aged 18 and above who are not already registered voters. He warned against double or multiple registration, describing it as a violation of the law.
However, he clarified that inter- and intra-State/FCT transfers of voter cards, as well as replacements for lost or damaged cards, are permitted during the exercise.
The CVR exercise will run for one year, until August 30, 2026. INEC urged citizens not to delay registration until the deadline approaches, noting that last-minute rushes typically overwhelm centres and trigger appeals for deadline extensions.
