Tehran, Iran — Iran’s parliament is weighing a potential withdrawal from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) as part of its response to the UN Security Council’s activation of the controversial “snapback” sanctions mechanism.
Lawmakers have reportedly introduced 14 different proposals to counter the development, reflecting growing frustration in Tehran after European powers moved to block sanction relief measures for Iran at the United Nations.
The proposed measures include scaling back cooperation with international nuclear inspectors, accelerating uranium enrichment, and, most notably, considering a complete exit from the NPT — a move that would mark a dramatic shift in Iran’s nuclear policy and heighten global tensions.
Diplomatic observers warn that such a withdrawal could put Iran on a collision course with both Western powers and regional rivals, further destabilizing the Middle East.
