A former drummer in a high school metal band, Takaichi is set to become the next Japanese prime minister after Shigeru Ishiba’s resignation, which is expected in the coming days, making her the first female prime minister in the country’s history.

Takaichi is a hard-line conservative and longtime ally of Shinzo Abe, known for repeated visits to Yasukuni Shrine, opposition to same-sex marriage, female succession to the Japanese throne, far-right affiliation and racist tendencies.
