Tensions are rising between Mali and Mauritania following a series of accusations, cross-border incidents and growing diplomatic strain.
Recent developments indicate that Malian authorities have accused Mauritania of indirectly harbouring hostile elements, a claim strongly rejected by Nouakchott as unfounded and provocative.
The controversy was heightened on March 15 when the Malian military alleged that two of its soldiers, previously held by armed groups, escaped from a refugee camp located in Mauritania before returning to Mali.
The claim suggested that the camp, reportedly under the supervision of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, could have been used as a base by armed elements.
Mauritanian authorities, however, denied the allegation and called for transparency, expressing readiness to open their territory to an independent investigation, including by regional bodies such as the Alliance of Sahel States.
The accusations come amid worsening internal challenges in Mali, where insecurity, economic strain and diplomatic isolation have continued to mount.
Large parts of central and northern Mali remain volatile, with armed groups expanding their operations despite ongoing military campaigns.
The situation has been further complicated by Mali’s security partnerships with foreign forces, including the Russian-linked Wagner Group and its successor structure, Africa Corps.
Reports from border communities have also pointed to incidents involving civilian casualties, arrests and destruction of property, allegedly linked to military operations near the Mauritanian frontier.
In one of the most serious incidents cited by observers, several Mauritanian nationals were reportedly killed near border in recent years, with calls for accountability yet to yield conclusive outcomes.
Diplomatic sources say Mauritania has maintained a measured response, rejecting the accusations while avoiding escalation and reaffirming its commitment to good neighbourliness.
However, the continued accusations and cross-border incidents could strain relations further and trigger public pressure within Mauritania for a firmer response.
While Nouakchott has so far exercised restraint, persistent tensions may test bilateral relations and regional stability in the Sahel.
