The Federal Government says Environmental Sustainability should be viewed as a national development imperative for public health, food and energy security.

Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal represented by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Salihu Usman who stated this at the 2026 Nigeria Environmental Summit in Abuja, pledged decisive action to unlock the country’s green economy.

For the Nigerian farmer whose crops have failed after months of drought, the families forced from their home by devastating floods, and the coastal community losing land to erosion…. these realities are becoming more frequent and costly, making environmental governance an urgent national priority.

Against this backdrop, stakeholders converged on Abuja for the Nigeria Environmental Summit (NESt) 2026, themed “Unlocking Nigeria’s Green Economy: Driving Climate Action and Environmental Governance.” The summit was designed as a unified platform to bring government, investors, researchers, development partners, civil society, communities and young innovators together to develop practical solutions to Nigeria’s environmental challenges under one national agenda.

“Climate change is already costing Nigeria an estimated 100 billion dollars annually, warning that meaningful progress will require commitments from every level of government backed by clear targets and timelines” says the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Health, Uju Rochas-Anwukah.

Representing the Minister of Environment, Permanent Secretary Salihu Usman said the Federal Government remains committed to ensuring that recommendations from the summit are translated into concrete actions, measurable impact and sustainable results.

Participants here stressed that while Nigeria faces growing threats from floods, desertification and biodiversity loss, the challenges also present opportunities for green investment, innovation and job creation.

As the summit ends, the expectation is that its guiding principle, “One Platform, One Conversation, Driving One National Environmental Agenda” will move beyond dialogue to coordinated action capable of building a greener, more resilient and economically sustainable Nigeria.
