The Benue State Government has officially declared an outbreak of Lassa Fever following a rise in infections across parts of the state.
According to the state health authorities, 56 suspected cases of the viral disease have been reported so far, out of which 8 cases have been laboratory confirmed, while 4 deaths have sadly been recorded.
The government said emergency response measures have been activated, including enhanced surveillance, contact tracing, and isolation of confirmed cases, to prevent further spread of the disease.
Residents have been urged to maintain strict hygiene practices, avoid contact with rodents, store food properly, and seek immediate medical attention at designated health facilities if symptoms such as fever, vomiting, or weakness occur.
Health officials also assured the public that treatment centres are on standby and that sensitisation campaigns are ongoing across affected communities.
The Benue State Government called for calm while appealing to citizens to cooperate fully with health workers, stressing that early reporting remains critical to controlling the outbreak.
Lassa Fever is a viral haemorrhagic disease commonly transmitted through contact with food or household items contaminated by infected rats.
