Nigeria’s ongoing tax reforms have significantly reshaped the country’s revenue administration framework, with the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) consolidating its role as the central collector of Value Added Tax (VAT) following the effective exit of the Nigeria Customs Service from import VAT collection.

Latest fiscal data indicate that Customs’ import VAT collection cost, which stood at N3.84 billion in December 2025, dropped to zero in January 2026. The development aligns with sweeping tax reforms that came into force on January 1, 2026, under a set of new tax laws designed to harmonise revenue collection and eliminate duplication across agencies, according to KPMG Assets.

Under the new regime, the NRS, formerly the Federal Inland Revenue Service, has been vested with broader powers to assess, collect, and account for federally accruable taxes, including VAT.

The reform is part of a wider effort to modernise Nigeria’s tax system, improve compliance, and enhance transparency through digital integration and centralised administration.
