KAMPALA, Uganda — Uganda’s police have announced a traffic management plan for the presidential nominations scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday at the Electoral Commission’s headquarters in Lubowa, Wakiso District.
The plan, released in conjunction with the commission’s guidelines, aims to manage congestion and ensure public safety on key roads leading to the venue. Police officials warned that only accredited vehicles and personnel would be permitted to the grounds.
Only two vehicles per presidential aspirant will be allowed access, each carrying no more than 10 people, including the candidate. The vehicles must display official police stickers to be granted entry.
“Any other vehicles without the designated stickers will be turned away at the checkpoints,” a statement from the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety said.
Traffic diversions are planned at several points on Entebbe Road. Vehicles traveling from Entebbe toward Kampala will be diverted at Namboole, Najjanankumbi, and other junctions. Traffic from Kampala heading toward Entebbe will be diverted at Kajjansi and Seguku.
According to police, all diversions will be clearly marked and staffed by traffic officers.
Parking at the nomination venue will be reserved for accredited vehicles only. Authorities stated that no processions, rallies, or mass mobilization of supporters would be permitted on public roads during the two-day exercise. The guidelines also prohibit “boda-boda” (motorcycle) convoys from accompanying aspirants.
Electoral Commission chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama said the traffic plan is part of a broader effort to ensure an orderly process. He appealed to aspirants and their agents to comply with the restrictions.
“These guidelines are meant to guarantee safety and efficiency,” Byabakama said. “We appeal to all parties to adhere to them so that the nomination exercise is conducted peacefully.”
The traffic plan will be in effect from 5 a.m. Tuesday through the conclusion of nominations on Wednesday.
Uganda’s 2026 presidential nominations are expected to draw widespread interest, with incumbent President Yoweri Museveni and several opposition challengers expected to participate.
