In a monumental gesture of appreciation and national pride, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced a comprehensive reward package for Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their outstanding success on the international stage.
Each player of the championship-winning squad will receive a cash reward of $100,000, a brand-new apartment, and the prestigious national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).
Making the announcement at a reception held in Abuja on Monday, President Tinubu praised the athletes for their discipline, resilience, and exemplary representation of the country.
“D’Tigress has not only brought glory to our country, they have become symbols of excellence, unity, and hope for the Nigerian youth,” President Tinubu said. “Their victory is our collective pride, and they deserve to be celebrated and supported in a manner befitting their achievements.”
In addition to the players’ rewards, each member of the coaching and technical crew will receive a cash sum of $50,000, also in recognition of their strategic brilliance and dedication behind the scenes.
The President emphasized that the gesture was not just a reward, but a statement that Nigeria values its sports ambassadors and is committed to investing in talent and youth development.
“We must uplift our champions and show the world that when you raise our flag in victory, your country will stand by you,” he added.
D’Tigress recently secured a historic win at the [insert specific tournament, e.g., FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship], cementing their dominance on the African continent and inspiring a new generation of basketball players across the nation.
This marks one of the most significant state recognitions for a national sports team in recent memory and further signals the administration’s intention to reposition sports as a tool for national pride and global influence.
