Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has extended financial support totaling N110 million to the families of 22 Kano athletes who lost their lives in a tragic road accident earlier this year.
The donation, disbursed under the Victim Support Fund (VSF), was announced on Thursday by Sanusi Dawakin Tofa, spokesperson to the Kano State Governor.
According to the statement, each of the bereaved families received N5 million, a gesture aimed at easing the financial and emotional burden left in the wake of the fatal incident.
“This intervention by the First Lady reflects her compassion and commitment to supporting Nigerian families in times of tragedy,” the spokesperson said.
The accident, which claimed the lives of the young athletes, had drawn national mourning and renewed calls for improved safety standards for interstate team travel.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State expressed gratitude to the First Lady, describing the donation as “timely and deeply appreciated,” and pledged continued support for affected families.
