The House of Representatives has condemned a bill introduced by some members of the United States Congress alleging mass killings of Christians in Nigeria and seeking sanctions against Nigerian government officials.
The lawmakers described the claims as misleading, baseless, and a misrepresentation of Nigeria’s security challenges.
The resolution followed the adoption of a motion co-sponsored by the Deputy Speaker, Rep. Benjamin Kalu, and 259 other lawmakers during plenary on Wednesday.
Presenting the motion, Kalu said the bill before the US Congress falsely portrays Nigeria as a country that persecutes Christians, whereas the nation’s security issues cut across ethnic and religious lines.
He said there was no evidence of state-sponsored persecution of Christians in Nigeria, noting that terrorist attacks in the country had affected both Muslims and Christians alike.
Kalu urged the US Congress and international community to rely on verified information and avoid actions that could undermine Nigeria’s unity and counterterrorism efforts.
The House, in adopting the motion, reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to religious freedom and peaceful coexistence among all citizens..If You’re Reading From Phoenix Click On Read Original at the top To Read Full Article
It also mandated its Committees on Foreign Affairs and National Security to engage with the US Congress and relevant diplomatic channels to present Nigeria’s true position on the matter.
