The Senate has confirmed Professor Joash Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) following his successful screening during plenary on Friday.
Prof. Amupitan, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and Professor of Law, succeeds Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who served two terms spanning ten years as the nation’s chief electoral officer.
A native of Kogi State in the North Central region, Amupitan currently serves as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) at the University of Jos.
During his appearance before the Senate, the new INEC Chairman pledged to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral system through the adoption of advanced technology, including the deployment of drones for monitoring and enhanced collaboration with relevant institutions such as the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to ensure credible and transparent elections.
