Six members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly have defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), dealing another blow to the opposition party in the state.
The lawmakers formally announced their defection during plenary on Thursday, citing irreconcilable internal crises and loss of confidence in the leadership of the PDP at both state and national levels.
The defecting legislators are:
- Hon. Muktar Nasir Kaura, representing Kaura North
- Hon. Nasiru Abdullahi Maru, representing Maru North
- Hon. Amiru Ahmad Keta, representing Tsafe West
- Hon. Bashar Aliyu Gummi, representing Gummi I Constituency
- Barr. Bashir Abubakar Masama, representing Bukkuyum North
- Hon. Bashir Bello, representing Bungudu West
In their separate letters read on the floor of the House, the lawmakers said persistent factional disputes within the PDP had made it impossible for them to effectively serve their constituents.
They expressed confidence that the APC would provide a more stable platform to pursue developmental goals and align with ongoing efforts of the federal government.
Political observers say the latest defections further alter the balance of power in the Zamfara Assembly and underscore the growing wave of realignments ahead of future electoral contests.+See more details
The Zamfara State chapter of the PDP had yet to officially respond to the defections as of press time.
