Rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has demanded a fresh formal invitation and an advance copy of the petition against him before he honours a scheduled meeting with the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Monitoring Unit.
Sowore, who had initially been invited by the Unit to appear on Monday, August 4, revealed on the same day that the appointment was postponed until further notice. However, in a new development, the IGP Monitoring Unit has reportedly contacted him again, requesting his presence later today, Tuesday, by 3:00 PM.
Taking to his social media platforms to provide an update, Sowore wrote:
“UPDATE: The ‘IGP Monitoring Unit’ has informed me just now that their lead is back from his trip to the North-East and has asked me to appear for an interview today at 3:00 PM.”
“I have responded that they must provide a fresh official invitation and an advance copy of the so-called ‘petition’ against me.”
“As soon as I get a timely response, I will head down there with the full house.”
The activist, who is also the Publisher of SaharaReporters, has remained vocal about alleged harassment by security agencies, maintaining that due process and transparency must be followed in such official engagements.
As of the time of filing this report, the police have not issued an official statement regarding the nature of the petition or the reason for the sudden rescheduling of Sowore’s invitation.
