The Supreme Court has reserved judgment in a suit challenging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s March declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.
A seven-member panel led by Justice Inyang Okoro adjourned proceedings on Tuesday after hearing final submissions from the parties involved.
The case was brought before the apex court by the Attorneys General of ten states, with the Federal Government and the National Assembly listed as defendants.
During the session, Delta State, one of the plaintiffs, formally withdrew from the suit — a move that was not opposed by Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), counsel to the Federal Government. If You’re Reading From Phoenix Click On Read Original at the top To Read Full Article
Lead counsel for the remaining plaintiffs, Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), clarified that the case does not challenge the President’s constitutional authority to declare a state of emergency.
Rather, it questions the extent of the declaration, particularly its implications for the offices of the Governor, Deputy Governor, and the Rivers State House of Assembly.
