The Nigerian Army has announced the elimination of three high-ranking Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) commanders during coordinated military operations in Borno State.
According to an official statement released on the Nigerian Army’s verified X (formerly Twitter) account, the deceased insurgent leaders have been identified as Amir Abu Ali, Amir Ibunu, and Amir Abu Waldume.
The operations took place in the early hours of Thursday in the towns of Mallam Fatori and Buratai, both located in Borno State.
The military’s Operation HADIN KAI, responsible for counter-insurgency efforts in the region, spearheaded the assaults.
The Nigerian Army reported that “scores” of Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists were neutralized during the fierce gunbattle.
Mallam Fatori, situated near Nigeria’s border with Niger, has long been a hotspot for insurgent activities.
In January 2025, the town witnessed a devastating suicide bombing attributed to ISWAP, resulting in the deaths of 27 Nigerian soldiers.
The elimination of these senior commanders is seen as a strategic victory for the Nigerian military, potentially disrupting the operational capabilities of the insurgent groups.
The Nigerian Army says it will continue to intensify its operations against insurgent groups in the northeast.
Further details regarding the operations are expected to be released as the military consolidates its gains and assesses the impact of its recent operations.
