U.S. President, Donald Trump, has sharply criticised the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, describing the alliance as ineffective without American support amid tensions over operations in the Strait of Hormuz.

In a strongly worded statement, Trump accused NATO allies of refusing to participate in efforts aimed at countering Iran, despite concerns over its nuclear ambitions.

“Without the U.S.A., NATO is a paper tiger,” he said, adding that allied countries declined to join what he described as a successful military effort.

Trump further alleged that while the conflict had been “militarily won,” NATO members were now complaining about rising oil prices without contributing to efforts to secure the Hormuz Strait.

“They complain about the high oil prices they are forced to pay, but don’t want to help open the Strait of Hormuz,” he said.

He described securing the waterway as a “simple military manoeuvre” and criticised allies for what he termed a lack of commitment.“Cowards, and we will remember,” Trump added.

There has been no immediate response from NATO officials regarding the remarks.

Analysts say the comments could further strain relations between the United States and its traditional allies as geopolitical tensions continue to rise in the Middle East.
