The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has issued a strong warning to Iran, declaring that the Middle Eastern nation would face total destruction if any assassination attempt were made against him.
Trump made the threat during a News Nation interview aired on Tuesday, amid escalating verbal exchanges between Washington and Tehran over alleged threats to the 79-year-old US leader’s life.
“I have very firm instructions. If anything happens, they’re going to wipe them off the face of this earth,” Trump said, responding to reports that Iran had issued threats against him.
The warning comes as tensions between the two longtime adversaries continue to deepen, with both sides openly threatening large-scale retaliation should their leaders be targeted.
Earlier on Tuesday, Iranian General Abolfazl Shekarchi, reacting to concerns over threats to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said Tehran would not hesitate to unleash devastating consequences if provoked.
“Trump knows that if a hand of aggression is extended toward our leader, we will not only sever that hand — and this is not a mere slogan,” Shekarchi was quoted by Iranian state media as saying.
“But we will set their world on fire and leave them no safe haven in the region,” he added.
Trump has repeatedly issued similar warnings since returning to the White House, insisting last year that Iran would be “obliterated” if it attempted to harm him.
Meanwhile, Iran continues to grapple with internal unrest following waves of anti-government protests described as some of the most violent since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Human rights organisations have reported thousands of deaths during the crackdown on protesters, although exact figures remain disputed due to communication restrictions imposed by Iranian authorities.
The unrest was triggered by worsening economic conditions, currency collapse and long-standing resistance to democratic reforms under Iran’s clerical leadership.
Is Trump’s warning a necessary show of strength, or a dangerous escalation in an already volatile region, and what would another US-Iran standoff mean for global security and ordinary civilians? Share your views in the comment section.
