BREAKING: TVET Exams Begin Nationwide

The Federal Government, through the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB), has started the 2025 entrance exam for students seeking admission into Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes across Nigeria.

Over 30,000 candidates are taking part in the exam nationwide.

Dr. Mohammed Aminu Mohammed, the Registrar and Chief Executive of NABTEB, spoke about the initiative while monitoring the exam at the Federal Technical College in Orozo, Abuja, on Saturday.

He described the TVET programme as an exciting government project aimed at equipping Nigerian youths with practical skills for various industries.

According to him, the entrance exam will help identify each candidate’s strengths and match them with suitable trades like electrical installation, tailoring, solar maintenance, and others.

Dr. Mohammed explained that the programme was designed to reduce Nigeria’s reliance on foreign labour and imported goods.

He stressed the importance of artisans, technicians, and craftsmen in boosting the country’s economy.

“We are moving away from just paper qualifications. The real question now is: what skills can you offer?” he said.

He added that many jobs in construction, like tiling and ceiling installation, are currently being done by foreigners, even though Nigerian youths are capable of doing them—if given proper training.

The programme includes practical training lasting between six months and one year, depending on the chosen trade.

After completing the programme, students will receive starter packs and may be eligible for small business loans.

“This is about more than just learning skills; it’s also about creating jobs and helping young people start their own businesses,” Dr. Mohammed noted.

He assured the public that plans are in place to accommodate successful candidates in federal technical colleges.

A selection committee made up of school principals, NABTEB officials, and representatives from the Federal Ministry of Education will oversee the admission process.

The results are expected to be released within 21 days. Dr. Mohammed added that by next year, the current paper-based exam system will likely become fully digital.
