The United Kingdom has confirmed the first state visit by a Nigerian leader in 37 years, with President Bola Tinubu and First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, set to be hosted by King Charles III and Queen Camilla.
According to official confirmation, the historic state visit will take place from March 18 to March 19, 2026, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria–UK diplomatic relations.
This will be the first time since 1989 that a sitting Nigerian president is accorded a full state visit by the British monarchy, underscoring renewed bilateral engagement between both countries.
During the visit, President Tinubu is expected to hold high-level engagements aimed at strengthening cooperation in areas including trade, investment, security, climate action, education, and governance, while also reinforcing long-standing historical ties.
State visits typically include ceremonial receptions at Buckingham Palace, bilateral meetings, and diplomatic events designed to deepen strategic partnerships.
The confirmation has already drawn attention from diplomatic observers, who describe the visit as a major boost to Nigeria’s international standing and a reflection of evolving UK–Nigeria relations under the current administration.
Further details of the visit programme are expected to be released in the coming weeks.
