On September 24, 2025, a letter signed by the Chief General Manager of Human Asset Management, Femi Adekunle, directed certain staff to hand over company property and await clearance before receiving their entitlements.
The letter stated that the step was necessary after repeated cases of sabotage within different sections of the 650,000 barrels per day refinery, which raised safety concerns.
The development quickly stirred speculation that the refinery had sacked a large number of workers.
However, management clarified that the action was not about dismissals but rather a reorganisation aimed at protecting assets and addressing internal breaches.
According to officials, the move was designed to plug leakages, identify sources of sabotage, and ensure operational safety.
The company stressed that the workers involved were not dismissed but placed under review as part of a clean-up process.
Once investigations are concluded and issues are resolved, affected staff could be reinstated.
The decision to carry out the process without prior notice was said to be deliberate in order to prevent those involved from concealing their activities.
Management further assured that the refinery remains fully operational, with both Nigerian and expatriate staff actively engaged in its daily activities.
It added that only individuals directly linked to sabotage were affected, while other employees not involved in such acts continue their duties without disruption.
