CNN reported on 10 March, citing two US intelligence sources, that Iran has started deploying naval mines into Hormuz shipping lanes using small craft carrying 2 to 3 mines each.

A few dozen have been laid in recent days. Iran retains 80 to 90% of its small boats and mine-laying vessels despite US strikes that have destroyed over 50 Iranian naval assets since 28 February.

The stockpile: between 2,000 and 6,000 naval mines of Iranian, Chinese, and Russian origin.

Trump responded by announcing the destruction of 10 inactive mine-laying boats and demanding immediate removal of any deployed mines or “military consequences at a level never seen before.”
